DIY: Heart Guest Book Canvas

This easy DIY is perfect for a guest book at a wedding, or even wall art for your home. When I came up with this I was looking for a great guest book idea for a wedding. The couple wanted something that would hang on the wall and look great too. So, after searching around, I found What You'll Need:

  • Canvas
  • Spray Paint
  • Card-stock Paper
  • Heart Paper Punch
  • Glue

Start by spray painting the canvas. I originally did a metallic gold, but the sheen was too much to look at, so we went with an aqua instead. Then I punched out 60 hear shaped card-stock papers for the guests to write a note on.

Now for the math problem! I laid out the hearts to get an idea of how many I wanted and where I wanted them. I decided on 56 hearts and made sure they were in line and straight before I started glueing.

Once they are in perfect order, time to start glueing. I used a glue gun and used just a dollip of glue on each. This heavy duty glue worked perfectly to keep each heart on the canvas.

Once you finish playing with glue, you will have a blank canvas with which to work. Honestly it looks fabulous just like it is.

After the wedding was over we had a fairly complete canvas. The bride and groom loved the idea and can't wait to hang it up in the home.

And there you have it. An easy DIY perfect for your wedding or for your home.

Guest Books Worth Hanging

Planning my sister's wedding (in about 6 weeks by the way) was a funny task. It was almost like I was getting married again in a way because I was looking for those specific things that brides look for, it was awesome. For example, I was looking for a guest book idea that was awesome and original. I hate the idea of a book so much because it just sits and gathers dusk, so I wanted to give them something they could easily hang on the wall that would look really cool. Here are a few of the different ideas I came up with. First of all, balloon thumb prints to create an "UP" photo, that's absolutely amazing, like really, AMAZING. I love that movie, and if the love story is any indication of two people's lives together, you know it will be amazing.

I ended up making a variation of the second photo which turns out really really great. I am putting together a DIY on this soon as well which I can't wait to show all of you who are looking for the same!

Tea Party Bridal Shower

There are so many fabulous details in this tea party-themed bridal shower. Seriously, so many fabulous little details! The concept is a vintage yet modern theme for the girls to celebrate in true bridal fashion with her closest friends  before her big day. From vintage table settings to pearls mixed with some fabulous florals spread about. And the menu, filled with tea blends, yummy treats and of course, scones, makes for the perfect menu for a tea party!

The Final Week!

Well, here we are, WEDDING WEEK!    I can’t believe it’s already here - our wedding is this Friday!  It seems like this last year has just flown by.  And, although we’re scrambling around finishing all the last minute details, I think we are in pretty good shape overall.  Our biggest concern is transporting wedding décor to the venue – they don’t have a ton of space to store it for us prior to the wedding.  Luckily the whole wedding party is staying at the hotel the night before – so we may just store things in our rooms.   We spent the weekend emailing back and forth with our vendors to confirm final details/ timing and organizing all of our reception décor.   I feel like we are in good hands – and won’t have to worry about too much on the wedding day.  I can't wait to see my rustic chic meet happy graphic vision come to life, I hope it's everything I hoped it would be - and that nothing I picked will clash!

I’m picking up my wedding dress tomorrow - I can't wait to wear it (I wish it was acceptable to wear it every day! what!)  Then I'm dropping off some items to our venue like escort cards, toasting flutes, cake cutter, and table numbers.   On Thursday I have a hair and nail appointment with a few of my bridesmaids, and then it’s off to the rehearsal, then celebrating at the rehearsal dinner with family & friends.  Friday will be such a whirlwind day, we need to remind ourselves to slow down and take it all in.

Do you have any last minute advice for me?  It’s been a lot of fun blogging here every Tuesday.  I really appreciate all the advice & support I’ve received over the last few months.  It's been great to have this opportunity to talk about the wedding plans here and get your feedback.  If you want to keep up with me then you can follow me here or here.

New Crafty Obsession {Washi Tape}

I’m in trouble. The research I was doing for this week’s blog post has lead to a serious new obsession: washi tape!

Source

I’ve seen it on craft sites and thought it would be fun to get some ideas of how brides are incorporating the decorative tape in to their wedding designs. I had no idea the search would uncover such gorgeous ideas! Washi tape is simple, colorful, fun and relatively inexpensive. And just a small piece of tape instantly adds a designer touch.

There are so many places to add it around your wedding day. Favors, table numbers, escort cards and bunting can all be jazzed up with washi tape.

I love how it looks on printed materials too. This black and white invitations is so sophisticated!

And if you still can’t get enough, washi tape even works in home décor. How incredible is this keyboard?

I’m off to stock up on a myriad of patterns and colors. Anyone have any good washi tape resources?

Welcome Bags..

I really like the idea of our guests being given a 'welcome bag' when they check in to the hotel.  We have been to a few weddings and we got things like advil, water, snacks, and gum in these cute little bags.  I think that while it might not be absolutely necessary, it's definitely a nice way to welcome our guests who will be spending the night.

I have seen some adorable cloth bags, like these cute bags from the wedding chicks, but I think we have a few too many guests (and are a little too close to the wedding) for these!

We might go with something a little easier though, like these adorable 'hooray!" bags from Handmade Weddings (my DIY bible).  I just love the fun vibe they give off - I think they fit in well with our theme.

If we wanted to stick with the pattern on our invitations, then these chevron bags would be cute!

This bag is so cute, with a bit of a vintage vibe.  I like the map,  it's such a cute detail.  Clearly I am drawn to anything resembling kraft paper.  :)

Do you appreciate a welcome bag when you check-in?  What are some things you'd suggest filling them with?  I'd love some suggestions or opinions on things you like to receive as a guest!

Blowing In The Wind {Ribbon Decor}

Somewhat unintentionally, a theme has emerged in some of my decorative ideas: Ribbons. And I have to say, I’m okay with this! I’ve always loved the look of ribbons on the back of the chairs, but I’m starting to think about incorporating ribbons throughout the wedding. I love the way they blow in the wind and create such a whimsical feeling. They kind of remind me of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Ribbons (or paper or fabric streamers) can provide a great backdrop for a space. I’m also thinking about using them to divide up and define some of the spaces at our venue, all while not obstructing the amazing views.

I am in love with this ribbon chandelier! If not for our wedding, maybe for our house....

I also love the ribbon wands as an alternative to flowers for the flower girl. So cute!

I started a little ribbon shopping this weekend; here are some initial favorites. I’m thinking that I can buy some of the fancier (and more expensive) ribbon in small quantities and mix it in with less expensive craft ribbon.

Do you have a good resource for reasonable ribbon, fabric or other craft supplies? I’d love to check it out!

Details, Details..

We are now inside of 30 days for the wedding, I can't quite believe it! Most of our details are planned, but that means we're down to the not so fun logistical stuff.  Things like seating charts or deciding how to transport things to the venue.  I would LOVE any seating chart tips you have, this process seems daunting.  How about I tell you what we've done so far, and you give me pointers/tips/advice for making the next 24 days stress-free, deal? Deal! Seating.  So far we are tracking all the RSVPs that come in with a spreadsheet that says what meal each guest has chosen.  This gets tricky with families though, figuring out who is eating what if the kids aren't sitting at the same table as their parents.  I have created a large floorplan with all the tables exactly as they will appear in our venue (thanks Martha Stewart).  Next up is starting to write our guest's names on post-its so that I can 'seat' them on my large floorplan, but also easily move them if I need to make a change.  I'm hoping this makes the process a little more smooth.

Escort Cards.  I created a pegboard seating display with washi tape covered closthespins (with the help of my MOH) that I'm really excited to use.  However I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get two names + the table number onto the template that came with this project.  It was originally shown with one name per card, so maybe that's my issue.  But the whole thing is giving me a headache, so I have asked for help from the etsy seller who did our lovely save the dates and our 'guestbook' mad libs.  So, that's one less thing I have to do!  And it's made me feel way less stressed knowing that all I have to do is send her a pdf of the names/tables, and she'll produce professional looking escort cards.  I just don't trust myself to get this task done on my own, so it's money well-spent.

Tranporting Venue Decor.  Another thing that is a little concerning is getting all our decor to the venue.  We have 3 doors to use as a backdrop, which are pretty heavy and awkward to transport since we attached stands to the bottom of each door.  Our venue said we could drop them off early, but only if there isn't an event going on in our reception room - and we wouldn't find out until the day before the wedding.  Our day-of coordinator will take care of decor set-up/tear-down, so we just need to carefully pack and get our items to the venue.  We have doors, a typewriter, some vintage soda crates, vintage suitcases, and wire crates.  The escort cards, cake stand, reception signs are things we can drop-off a few days before the wedding.  And I also have an appointment with our florist this week to drop off mason jars, vases, and some milkglass - so that will be a huge help.

Oh, and did I mention we're moving into a new house this weekend?  So I am trying to packing wedding items carefully and keep them all together, especially all the glassware.

Bathroom Baskets.  I think we've all seen the basket of toiletries in the ladies room at wedding.  Hairspray, bobby pins, spray deordorant, etc.  Do you use these at weddings?  I can't decide if it's a nice courtesy, an outdated fab, or somewhere in between.  Is it worthwhile or a waste to buy all these items?

Flip Flops.  I have seen (and used) flips flops or 'dancing shoes' at a wedding or two.  But as a bride I'm not sure I feel they are necessary.  Would you use a pair of flip flops at a wedding, or would you just as soon go barefoot?  Or keep your heels on the whole night?

Thanks for sticking with me as I navigate through the not so pretty details - note the lack of a bathroom basket picture.  I'm getting so excited, but I'll be relieved when we have everything ready to go.  Any last minute advice would be appreciated!

{Something Blue} inspiration

I've been busy lately locking  down our photographer and DJ... not to mention negotiating the rates for our room block at the hotel, planning our engagement session, save-the-dates.... the list goes on. Since it's a rainy day here in LA today, let's talk about "something blue." Did you know the next line in the famous poem is

Something old, something new Something borrowed, something blue And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

I was curious about the origin of this tradition and thanks to a quick & easy google search I learned that blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. "In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity."

I'm not sure if I'm going to pick shoes or accessories to play out this tradition, but I do know that I will participate ;-)

Here are some of the images I was inspired by:

Will you be wearing something blue? What are you planning on wearing?

Looking forward to hearing your ideas :)

Vintage Typewriter Love

Kyle and I are the proud new owners of a 1920 Underwood typewriter. It's beautiful, rusty, it smells, and we love it.

It's so fun to think about the life this machine had before we found it. I mean, 1920 is a long time ago! This thing was shiny and probably finding its way into an office somewhere, or maybe onto the desk of an aspiring writer. Who knows! That's what is so fun about it! By the time it came to us (for $100 on Craigslist), it was a little broken down, didn't work too well, and needed a new typewriter ribbon. Thankfully, my future husband has that crazy ability to fix anything you put in front of him, so he shined it up, got new ribbon, and greased the wheels. It works like a charm now.

We had decided early on that we love vintage typewriters and definitely wanted one at our wedding. We want to use it as a guest book, so guests can type us a message and leave it with a Polaroid photo of themselves.

But it was Kyle's bright idea that we use this typewriter for all sorts of other things! We both have bad handwriting, so why not type out all of the addresses for save the dates and invites?

addresses

Kyle even went so far as to type up the entire letter to the person we are asking to be our officiant! We're having way too much fun with this thing.

There are all sorts of places we can use our typewriter, and we are excited for all of them. We just love that SMACK it makes when the key hits the paper!

Do you have plans to use a typewriter in your wedding, or for anything else? Do you too love the nostalgic elegance of a vintage typewriter?

Vintage typewriter font has this awkwardness about it that I adore. Nothing is in a straight line, and you have to "x" out your mistakes. They're a fun throwback to a time of better spellers and more thoughtful letter writers.
