Put a Ring on it :: Something Old, Something New

With this being my very first post on E&I, I thought it appropriate that I start at the beginning – the day I got engaged. Most of us ladies picture the moment of our proposal with a big shimmering diamond peeking out of that little box. My story happened a little differently (and I could not be happier with how it turned out!). My boyfriend, excuse me fiancé, Chris, proposed to me with his maternal grandmother’s wedding ring. It fits perfectly with the vintage style I love and is so special to have something that saw his grandmother through many wonderful years.

My Ring!

Chris’ idea was that this ring could be my wedding band and that we could go design the actual ‘engagement’ ring together later that day. He knows how picky I can be and while I know I would have loved whatever he chose on his own, I was thrilled to have a part in designing the ring. Chris’ family friend and jeweler, Lynn of Lynn Hill & Co., had been helping him with the process of fixing up the ring he gave me and he had an appointment for us that afternoon. I have loved pear-shaped rings for the past few years so I at least had that part figured out.

Here is some of my inspiration:

The traditional way to wear pear stones is with the pointed side up, but I love that you can change the whole look by turning it over. Lynn was so patient while I tried on rings and figured out just how I wanted everything to look. While I thought I knew exactly what I wanted before I went in, I found it was a little more complicated when I actually got into the shop and had all the amazing options around me. Not to mention taking into account that I wanted the two rings to complement each other. I was imagining how guys must feel on their own picking out a ring – the pressure!

I finally came to all the decisions I needed to make and can’t wait to see the end result in a couple weeks. I decided on a thin, plain band (because with pave it just looked like too much going on along side the existing ring), bezel setting (since the ring will already be sitting high enough to get up over the wedding ring and prongs would make it even higher), and a halo around the main stone (hopefully I have all my jewelry lingo right!).

Did you have a hand in your engagement ring design or did you prefer to leave it up to your man? If you did go along to help design the ring, did you find it harder than you thought it would be?

Of course rings, jewelry and all things sparkly are so much fun to day dream about (and try on!), but this brings me to another thing I’ve been thinking about over the past few weeks…staying grounded/calm/sane during this coming year. I think the first few weeks of being engaged are sort of the calm before the storm that can be wedding planning. Once reality sets in that you have a very important party to plan! In this time I have been thinking more big-picture – what it means to be getting married, what our dream wedding would be (if logistics and money were not factors), what things will be the most important to us on our wedding day and looking back on it.

Time and again I come back to two things that I know I want – 1. For our wedding to be a true reflection of Chris and me as individuals and as a couple along with the community and lives we have built together, and 2. For everyone to have FUN! I am hoping that if I can keep these two things at the back of my mind during this process, it will help me to be confident in the decisions I make and enjoy this special time as much as possible. Of course, I want other things too (i.e. great food, lovely décor, etc.), but I think by coming back to my main points of focus, I will be able to make decisions with more ease.

How are you staying grounded during your wedding planning? Do you find that having some basic theme or idea to come back to keeps you on the right track?

Bridesmaid Dress Shopping!

I can't help but start by saying that I have the most amazing group of girls in my bridal party. I only have one Maid of Honor and two Bridesmaids, so it's a small group (although we have four flower girls!), and I love it. Having only a couple of girls is perfect for me, as it feels a bit more manageable and it allows me to treat them to a few more things that I wouldn't be able to afford with a large group of girls. These kick-ass women are totally fun, organized, and easy-going. I couldn't ask for a better group of girls to go through this wedding planning process with! One of my bridesmaids is in town from New Zealand this week, so I took this opportunity to go bridesmaids dress shopping with her. Yay! Since she can't exactly shop at the same stores as the rest of us, seeing as she spends her time in either New Zealand or Canada, I wanted to make sure she got to try on the J. Crew dresses she liked while she was here. I invited my Bay Area bridesmaid along, booked an appointment at J. Crew in San Francisco, which has a little wedding salon, and off we went!

Once we arrived at J. Crew, they sneaked us back into a tiny room with two dressing rooms and a mirror. Basically the way it works for bridesmaids there is much like how it works for brides. They have one of every bridesmaids dress there, and showcase all of the available colors, but they're all in a size 8. So my girls had to try on a dress in the style they liked and a different dress in the color they liked, and have them all clipped to fit them.

I am very happy to report that my out-of-town bridesmaid found her dress and she looks absolutely stunning in it! It's the Miranda dress in cotton cady that I showed you a few weeks ago. I don't think anyone could do this dress better justice than this girl.

My other bridesmaid tried on a few different dresses, but we all agreed that the J. Crew spiced wine color was MADE for her. She was a little apprehensive of it before our visit, but once she tried it on, it was obvious this was the color she needed to wear. Beyond that, the Anita dress in cotton cady was also made for her! She didn't get to try on this dress in the spiced wine, so we'll have to order it and see for ourselves, but I'm pretty sure these two girls are all set, which is exciting!

Now I get to spend a day in San Diego with my Maid of Honor and go shopping with her! I'm thinking this cypress color would look fabulous on her. All three women have brown hair and a similar skin tone.

When I held up all three colors together, our fabulous attendant, Lizzie, at J. Crew said she hadn't seen these three colors I picked paired together before, but we all agreed they looked great and were perfect for Fall!

I am having way too much fun shopping with these girls. After our visit to J. Crew, we had a to-die-for dinner and drinks at Millennium. (Small tip: If you haven't ever been to Millennium in San Francisco, you must go. Uhhhmazing!!)

Did you go dress shopping with your girls? Or did you let them pick out their own dresses on their own time?

if the shoe fits {bridal shoes}

I consider myself to be cheap'n chic. That being said, I love fashion that looks fabulous and does not cost an arm and a leg. Yes, my wedding day is going to be amazing, but that doesn't mean I need a $1,700 pair of shoes to feel fabulous. Yes, you read that number correctly. Some of you girls out there feel just fine spending that kind of mulah on a pair of pumps... but I, ladies, do not. Even if I had that kind of money to spend, I would not spend it on shoes... I'd spend it on a videographer. But, to each their own. This post is dedicated to the ladies who want to look and feel fabulous with breaking the bank. Who cares what the label says on the close-up your photographer is going to get of your shoes. (Gasp!) she is not wearing designer shoes on her wedding day?! Well, I might.... and if I do you best believe I'll get them at Loehmann's or The Rack ;-)

Here are some shoes I found inspiring. By the way, the sparkly one on the right by Enzo is only $159!

and who says they have to be white?

I know there are a lot of you out there that may disagree with me on the subject of shoes. I have many girlfriends who are passionate about their Christian Louboutin's and Manolo Blahnik's thanks to Carrie Bradshaw. But tell me ladies, how much is TOO much to spend on shoes?? Oh, and what color are you going for? Traditional white, or something more daring? Please share!

Bridal Market Faves

Next year I'm definitely heading to Bridal Market. Well, at least I hope so : ) In the meantime, I have been pinning some fabulous finds from all the new collections that designers are showing off right now. Spring 2013....hummm I'm so jealous of all you 2013 brides out there!

I'm super excited about where bridal fashion is headed. Look at all these awesome details.

I'll let you in on a little secret right here. I'm obsessed with Sarah Seven. Although if you know me, that is no secret :) I have been obsessed with every single piece she has put out, and this year is no different. I have been lucky enough to spend more time with her, this girl is not only incredibly talented but one of the nicest people ever! Anywho, this year....GOLD wedding dress! YES. I'm so excited about this.

 And to top off some of my faves, the dress that has been going around town, the red Vera Wang gown. What's up with all the statement colors this year? I quite like it, I have to say! RED, bright and bold red, now that is how you make a statement at your wedding, just saying!

So what do you guys think? Do you love these new statement pieces and new bridal looks?

Affordable Shades of Grey {bridesmaids dresses}

Now that I have hired a wedding coordinator I feel like a lot of things are falling into place. For example, we finally hired a photographer!!! What a relief! The next step in that area is locking down a cinematographer and an officiant (expect a post on that soon). In a couple of weeks we are interviewing 2 officiants, a DJ, then visiting a florist...and that's all in one day!  Now that a lot of the big aspects of my planning are almost complete it's time to revisit the bridesmaids dress hunt. You may have read my original post about bridesmaids dresses. Since then, one thing is for sure now: I want grey dresses for my maids. What's not for sure is the style... long, short, mixed styles, etc.

Last night I was watching the movie "Bridesmaids" and I had to laugh when one of the women suggested they choose a dress that was $800. That amount is ridiculous, which many would agree. However, I also think anything north of $250 is absurd. When I first started casually looking at dresses for my girls I discovered that finding something affordable would be a challenge.

My best friend Shana is getting married this June and found fabulous bridesmaids dresses at http://www.dessy.com/ They have every style imaginable and tons of colors to choose from, and they are AFFORDABLE!!! The one piece of advice she gave me was make sure you see the color in person and have one of your girls try on the style you like. This seems like a no-brainer, but can you imagine just ordering online then finding out later that the cut and color you chose was unflattering in person? What I also like about Dessy is that they will tell you the nearest store to you where you can see the dresses in person. Awesome!

Here are just some of the styles I like from the Dessy Group that are affordable (less than $250).

Any other suggestions for affordable bridesmaids dresses?  Please share your ideas and websites!

Romantic Bridal Session

We are starting the morning out with a fabulously romantic bridal shoot. The soft vintage feel is inspired by an Enchanted mid-spring daydream that this fabulous group put together. Bridal shoots are incredibly important. Even when you are hectically trying to enjoy your wedding day, taking the time to find a perfect spot and grab a few images that you will forever have, well, that is more important than missing 15 minutes of cocktail hour! Durance Images Photography did a wonderful job with this lovely shoot.

Mismatched 'maids: Update

Warning: spoiler alert! As you may recall, I told you way back in December that I'd be letting my girls pick their own bridesmaids dresses.  I honestly thought it would be really easy for them to find a dress since I gave such a wide range of options but only half of the girls have found one and we're just over 2 weeks away from the wedding.  EEK!  However, the half that have found dresses are ah-ma-zing.  Take a look below to see how they all look together.  I'm in love!  Each one really fits the individual style of the girl wearing it and yet they somehow all work together.

I've given the 3 remaining girls until this Saturday to find a dress and send me a pic and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they find.  It was especially important to give them a deadline as I am not planning on having them carry bouquets during the wedding and the accessories I've already purchased for them should somehow look cohesive.  If after the other 3 have bought their dresses and I realize my original idea doesn't work out, I will have to scramble for a Plan B!

Mismatched Men

If you've been keeping up with my planning, you already know that my bridesmaids will be wearing mismatched dresses.  Well, we've decided to go down that path with the groomsmen as well.  The decision came about more out of necessity rather than desire because all 4 groomsmen will be traveling to the wedding (2 from Austria, 1 from Illinois and 1 from California) so it was impossible to get them all together to try on suits.  The rental options for our desired color (grey) were slim to none and we did not want to pick out a suit that each guy "had" to buy since they're already paying for travel related expenses. We tossed around the idea of having all groomsmen wear black since they all had their own black suits and then hubby-to-be would wear a grey suit.  We imagined it looking something like this:

or possibly even like this

However, I wasn't really sold on this idea because I didn't think black suits would look as nice with the bridesmaids in their blush/nude/softer colored dresses.

We then decided to just ask the guys if they already own a medium grey suit- luckily, two already did and two had no problem finding one to buy (and for less than a rental, score!).  They're not all the same color but hopefully they will all compliment each other.  I don't think they'll vary as much as the colors below but even if they do, I think we'll be okay since these guys look fabulous, right?!

Is anyone else doing mismatched suits for the guys?  Any tips that we should follow in order to keep the look cohesive despite the different suits?

What to Wear? {Bridesmaids Dresses}

Since I found my wedding dress and can no longer stare at millions of photos of long white dresses online anymore, I've shifted my virtual window shopping eyes to my bridesmaids' dresses! I have major girl crushes on my maid of honor and two bridesmaid, and it's important to me that they all like their dresses. They each have amazing, unique personalities, and I want their dresses to represent their personalities... while still fitting my aesthetic, of course. Problem is, every time I look at a photo of bridesmaids standing beside their bride, I think they all look amazing. I'm having such a hard time narrowing it down! But I think I've at least narrowed it down to two options at this point. I think. But now I need your advice! Seriously, I'm stuck.

The first option is having them all pick out a navy dress that they like. Navy looks so beautiful with some brightly colored flowers. Or white flowers. And they look great next to these light gray suits below, like Kyle's groomsmen will likely be wearing.

I love that the girls below each have different, brightly colored shoes on!

So lovely with some nice, colorful flowers.

This one is extra special, since it's my venue :)

one, two, three, four

Depending on the day of the week, I'm also in love with the idea of doing different, colorful dresses for each of them too! Colorful dresses just exude so much personality, which is exactly what I'm going for. Don't these just make you smile?

one, two, three

If I do the different colors, I'm thinking of picking these three warm Fall colors (not necessarily these exact dresses) and pairing them with some nude shoes and white and/or yellow flowers:

one, two, three

So, what do you think? Please help me decide! All navy? Varied colors? What do you think about these three colors?
