Building a Meaningful Ceremony

Vows1Source

"Writing a ceremony can seem exciting and liberating, while feeling terrifying and overwhelming at the exact same time" - Meg Keene, A Practical Wedding.

My fiancé and I asked my uncle to officiate our wedding ceremony. And, while we are very excited to be having someone we know and admire be a huge part of this day, it means navigating the road of putting together a ceremony. Exciting...but also a bit overwhelming.

Megan Keene of A Practical Wedding's advice? Start by building a foundation - what you and your fiancé believe marriage to be, fundamentally. Sit down together and each write down a couple things and then go through them together. Her other great piece of advice is to know that you don't have to write your ceremony from scratch. Take the ideas and 'feeling' you know you want for your ceremony and then find a service structure that works for you. No reason to completely reinvent the wheel. It's about finding something that's authentic to the two of you.

VowsSource

Once you find a ceremony 'structure' you like, you can edit to make it just perfect. From there, start adding in the extras like readings or music. Keep in mind the length you want and how everything will sound out loud and in front of your family and friends.

Vows2Source

I think it's easy for us brides and grooms-to-be to get a little caught up in the material details of a wedding (guilty girl, right here), but it's good to take the time to thoughtfully plan the ceremony. A heartfelt ceremony sets the foundation for a great reception (and marriage!). Just think of the extra sweet and special ceremonies you have attended. They make you get all sappy and remind you what is important in life. They make you love love.

Repeat after me...my ceremony is not the boring part of the wedding. It is about me and my fiancé and our lives together and, therefore, it will be awesome! :-)

Group Pinterest Boards

One of the most fun things I've done so far with wedding planning is starting a group pinterest board to let friends and family share ideas they came across.  When I first got engaged, people close to me started e-mailing inspiration and I knew I needed to come up with a way to keep it all organized so that I could access it when it came down to deciding on the details.

So, I started a group pinterest board and sent out an e-mail that if people would like to be involved to let me know and I'd invite them to pin to the board. A couple months later and we're having so much fun with it!  Obviously I've kept my own boards (since I don't want to bombard the group board with the crazy amount of pins I've amassed), so this has been a fun way to separate out the things that other people find that I haven't seen.

The most awesome thing about it so far is seeing how your friends see your style. So far, everyone has been spot on pinning things I really like and ideas that I think are really creative and fun. Its a really cool feeling to feel like over the years you've developed a style that people have picked up on and that they're so excited about sharing images that fit in with that aesthetic.

Its also been a really helpful way to have bridesmaids sharing ideas about dresses, shoes, hair, makeup, etc all in one place so that we can keep the long e-mail chains to a minimum. People can Like or Comment on pictures they find especially pretty and that gives me an idea of what my girls would like once we get down to finalizing options.

These are all images that friends and bridesmaids have pinned to our board, and even though I get sucked into a ton of blogs, these were all images I hadn't necessarily pinned myself. Its fun to have a lot of sets of eyes out there in the universe to track down inspiration that might be outside of my usual network. Plus, I think they all fit together with our inspiration board really well.

If you're the type of person who gets overwhelmed with too many options, this might not be the road for you, but for me its been a terrific way to keep other people's ideas organized and to start a little wedding inspiration community during the beginning of getting this thing planned!

Forest Engagement by Wai Reyes Photography

Who knew you could find such a serine forest in the middle of southern California? Wai Reyes Photography did a fabulous job capturing these two and their love. And her outfit selections? I die.

From the Photographer: For a couple who lives by the beach, a serene engagement session in a tranquil, woodsy area is what Brittany and MJ had in mind. Upon our first meeting, I was immediately informed they don't do PDA well and an engagement session might be difficult for any photographer to shoot ;) So we opted for a secluded venue where I captured these two being themselves: goofy, funny and best of all, just happy being together. No props, just them, and their tiny photographer. Bride stands at 6ft tall, and groom is about 6'4" :)

What an adventure this shoot was! I made my way down from Portland Oregon to Bend Oregon where I met this amazing couple at their home to go over clothing ideas and then we drove to rock climbers heave Smith Rock. Chris and Julia share a deep passion for rock climbing and really wanted to incorporate it into their engagement shoot. Eastern Oregon has such an amazing climate and landscape for shooting, which made this shoot so awesome. in every shot you can just see how these two adore each other and truely love spend their time together. I loved being able to photograph them not only a portrait type way but also in a very journalistic way too:)

Nailed It!

My close friends know that I'm a wee bit obsessed with nails (I'm guilty of having a nail polish drawer...which houses approximately 75 nail polishes). I probably own every color in the rainbow (in matte and glossy, natch!), and I've been known to paint my nails upwards of three times a week. That being said, my wedding day nails have been on my mind big-time, and I'm not about to go "classic red" or an Essie pale pink. Throughout this process, I've been trying to focus on what feels like me rather than obsessing over the entire wedding looking "timeless"--heads up, no wedding is timeless because it's one day long. Here are a few nail looks that I'd totally rock on my wedding day. Which is your favorite?

Finding an industrial venue

Going into the wedding planning process, I knew choosing a venue would be the hardest task, because I'm an architect. It was the first thing I wanted to go look at it, even though I knew I might be overly critical. Also, Erik only had plans for a brief leave when he'd be able to come home and see a few top choices, so I cast a wide net and started narrowing down the options.  I knew the general "feel" I wanted to find, but a lot of different types of venues fell in that category. After a lot of deliberation we found a place a venue that hit almost all of our initial wants and will only require a little bit of problem solving on our end. Here are the ultimate items that helped make our decision:

KNOWING OUR WANTS: We were able to establish some known things about our wedding day that helped pare down the giant list of venues we started with. For example, since we knew we were going to have a spring wedding in Seattle, we ruled out all venues that were primarily outdoors. The weather is unpredictable and generally rainy here until about July and I wasn’t going to kid myself that I would luck out with the perfect 70 degree spring day. So, farms and parks generally got cut off. Also, after we put together our inspiration board, it was clear we wanted a building with history and industrial edge. There were some hotels and restaurants that made the first cut, but we knew golf courses and newer venues would be off our list. Then we narrowed it down further by price and set a couple other deal breakers, like venues that wouldn’t allow us to have a full bar. It was tough to knock out some, but as Erik told me “we can’t have 20 weddings, you have to rule something out somehow”.

SPACE: We’re inviting around 150 guests. Surprisingly, I found this to be a tricky amount of people to find a venue for. Most small/midsize venues comfortably fit about 120, but since we have a long engagement and people basically have this on their calendars already, we are expecting more than the traditional attendance percentage. I didn’t want a place that was going to feel really squished with 130 or 140 people. On the flip side, most large venues can fit 300 or more, and some of those places we visited felt pretty cavernous and we wanted to make sure our wedding feels cozy and happy. In the end,  our final few venues were the ones where our guest size would be comfortably accommodated.

FLEXIBILITY: A big thing for me was flexibility on timing. I’m always disappointed when I go to a wedding, and the party just gets really rocking around 9 pm and then all of a sudden its last call, last dance and you’re thinking “now what”. On my wedding day, I might be done by 9, but I want the flexibility to make that decision or party until the wee hours. One of the criteria on my list was to try and find a place either with no curfew or a late curfew so we wouldn’t feel quite as rushed through the evening. This helped out rule out venues that required us to be cleaned up and out any earlier than midnight.

LIGHT: One of the difficulties in looking for historical industrial venues is that many of them are in older buildings without great natural daylight. Even though our ceremony is going to be in the evening, I looked up the sunset time for our wedding day, and its not until 7:30 pm. That means if we get started around 5:30, we still have 2 hours of daylight to enjoy. We ruled out a couple venues that just felt really dark and that we knew wouldn’t be great for photos.

In the end, we chose an art gallery in an up and coming older neighborhood of Seattle near the space needle (the two images above are from the gallery). We're planning to have the ceremony and the reception in the same location. The owners are fabulous and have been so great to work with. We get our choice of caterer and can provide our own bar, which should save us a good bit of money. The space is beautiful, and there are skylights to bring in great afternoon light. There is no curfew so in theory our guests can party their hearts out. Its nearby to several hotels and other amenities, and there is decent parking (which can also be a challenge in an urban setting). Locking in the venue really made things feel real – now its time to start imagining the details!

[ If you're looking for other Seattle venues with a similar vibe, consider 415 Westlake, Melrose Market Studios, Sodo Park, and Georgetown Ballroom]

Sweet Succulents

With four months to go until our big day, we have been focusing on locking in rest of our vendors (florist, cake and entertainment). This week flowers have been on my mind and I'm loving a mixture of local wild flowers and succulents. Below is my inspiration for bouquets. I love how the succulents add texture and compliment coral and white flowers.

For our tablescape we plan to fill mismatched vases and planters with local flowers and succulents. To keep our flower costs down we will be planting some of our own succulents to mix in with our florists' creations. We plan to replant these succulents in our garden after out wedding too!

Did you, or are you planning on using succulents for your wedding? Were you able to reuse them?

I have also been contemplating how to highlight our moms on our wedding day. Did you go with a corsage, wrislet, small bouquet or something else for yours? Would love to hear what other brides are doing!
